Neuropsychology is a branch of psychology dedicated to understanding the relationship between brain function and behaviour. Clinical neuropsychologists are trained to assess, diagnose and provide support to people experiencing cognitive difficulties due to conditions affecting the brain. This includes determining whether cognitive difficulties are due to an organic condition or a psychological disorder.
Clinical neuropsychologists can also provide psychological counselling to treat a range of psychological conditions such as anxiety and depression.
To be eligible to use the title ‘psychologist’, a person needs to undertake an accredited course of study in a field of psychology and be registered with the national registration board, the Psychology Board of Australia (AHPRA). A psychologist has extensive training in specific evidence based therapeutic approaches, which are aimed at assisting people who are experiencing a range of difficulties. These include anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, relationship difficulties and addictive behaviours. In Australia psychologists do not prescribe medications.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has undergone a medical degree, and additional training to specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions. They can provide treatment and also prescribe specific medications targeted towards alleviating or managing mental health symptoms. To see a psychiatrist you are required to have a referral from your General Practitioner (GP).
