Do I need a Referral?

No GP referral necessary

You do not need a referral to access our services. However, if you wish to claim a Medicare rebate, a referral from a GP, Psychiatrist, Neurologist or Paediatrician is required.

YES

  • If you want to claim a rebate for your psychology sessions under Medicare then you will need a Mental Health Care Plan and referral from your General Practitioner (GP).
  • If you have a claim approved through WorkSafe, you will need a referral letter from your GP and written approval from your WorkSafe case manager
  • Any third party organisation that refers you for psychological treatment or a neuropsychological assessment will need to provide a referral letter and written approval for funding the services requested (e.g., TAC).
  • If you are being referred by a psychiatrist or another specialist you will need a referral letter from them.

NO

  • If you are referring yourself privately you do not need a referral. That is, you will be paying for the sessions in full via EFTPOS or credit card at the end of each session, or bank transfer prior to the session if its a telehealth appointment.
  • You do not need a referral from a medical practitioner to qualify for private health insurance rebates.

How do I get a Referral?

We are service providers for:

  • TAC
  • NDIS
  • WorkSafe Victoria
  • Private Health Funds

There are different referral pathways available:

  • Medicare - obtain a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP
  • Transport Accident Commission (TAC) - in consultation with your GP and support coordinator
  • WorkSafe Victoria - in consultation with your claims manager as well as a GP referral letter
  • National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) support co-ordinator
  • Psychiatrists can refer to psychologists for Medicare-eligible services without a mental health care plan. However, you do require a referral letter from your specialist with all the relevant information.
  • Self Referral: You can also self refer if you wish to pay for sessions privately or claim through your private health fund.

Please read the Referrals Checklist below for the referral information required.
